The Team Nutrition Demonstration Project is...
based on teaching children to practice the Dietary Guidelines for Americans in their daily lives. Kansas is one of four states awarded Team Nutrition Demonstration Project grant funds from the USDA. The four states participating in the TNDP are Kansas, Idaho, Iowa and Michigan.

to develop highly visible nutrition projects in Kansas schools which can be used as a model for other schools across the country.
Grant funds are being used to...
deliver nutrition messages in a positive and interactive manner using multiple communication channels and to fully implement classroom activities in K-8 classrooms using teaching kits developed especially for USDA. Classroom teaching kits include:
- Food and Me (Pre-K Kindergarten)
- Food Time (Grades 1-2)
- Food Works (Grades 3-5)
- yourSELF (Grades 6-8)
The fifteen Kansas schools participating in TNDP are
- participating from the project onset in the spring of 2000 through the spring of 2002.
- using a team management style to involve all stakeholders.
- implementing activities that comply with the coordinated nutrition policy and intervention plan developed by local school personnel.
- delivering nutrition messages to students through these six communication channels:
- classroom,
- nutrition promotions in the school cafeteria,
- school wide nutrition activities,
- take home activities,
- community events, and
- local media.
TNDP participant schools benefit from
- the opportunity to be part of a select group of schools participating in an important national initiative to improve the health of students
- implementation of a recommended framework for effective nutrition education
- materials and supplies for the schools Nutrition Resource Center
- a user-friendly teachers manual with suggested classroom activities
- a mobile cooking cart, equipped with basic kitchen tools and small appliances, to be used for classroom food preparation activities
- funds for nutrition activities in the classroom, cafeteria, school and community
- stipend for a Team Nutrition School Coordinator
- training for the Team Nutrition School Coordinator at no cost to the school
- on-site nutrition education training for participating teachers
- training for school food service staff
- technical assistance provided by KSDE at no charge
